The Department of Microbiology offers a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. The curriculum requires foundation courses in basic science and Microbiology, followed by a flexible choice of electives to meet the needs of students preparing for health professions, graduate study and careers in research and the biotechnology industry. Students learn through a combination of lecture, laboratory and seminar courses.


Required core courses in the sciences include:

  • Microbiology (22 hours): General Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Metabolic Regulation, Microbial Diversity, Senior Seminar. Laboratory components are part of General and Medical Microbiology and Microbial Diversity
  • Microbiology Electives (6 hours)
  • Chemistry (16 hours): General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry
  • Biochemistry (4 hours)
  • Physics (8 hours)
  • Calculus and Statistics (9 hours)
  • Other Life Science courses (15 hours): Biology, Genetics, Advanced Cell Biology or Physiology and Laboratory elective (4 credits)

Students are free to choose from a array of Microbiology elective courses and free electives. The department suggests the following courses for students who wish to concentrate in specific areas of Microbiology for career development or in preparation for advanced graduate or professional study.

  • CALS honors with research in Microbiology (6 hrs)
  • Manipulation of Recombinant DNA (4 hrs)
  • Microbial Biotechnology (3 hrs)
  • Applied Bioprocessing (2-4 hrs)
  • External Learning Experience - industy internship (3 hrs)
