Are there any courses in which I must earn at least a C?
It depends on when you declared your Microbiology major. Only the most recent curriculum, for students entering after January 1, 2005, requires at least a C- in most science courses. See the degree audit for the curriculum for the exact course requirements. You cannot switch to an older curriculum if you started after January 1, 2005.

I took some NCState courses before I officially enrolled as a degree student, how do I determine which requirements apply?
"Entered the university" means first enrolled in a degree program, whether as a freshman or a transfer student. If you took a few NCState courses as a high school student or through continuing education before enrolling in a degree program; your requirements are determined by when you first take a course as a degree student, not by when you first took any NCState course.

Are there any scholarships for microbiology majors?
Yes. Fill out a CALS scholarship form, available in the microbiology office (4510C Gardner Hall) or in room 115 Patterson Hall.

How do I find a job in a laboratory (for pay, academic credit, or volunteer)?

  • For work in the department: Go to the microbiology web site and read about the research interests of the departmental faculty . Make an appointment to speak with faculty about working in their labs.
  • For academic credit for a paid internship or similar experience outside of the university (as MB492 External Learning Experience): Discuss the nature of the outside experience with your adviser before you begin the work to get a preliminary ruling on whether it is suitable for academic credit; get the form/explanatory handout from the microbiology office; fill out the form with your work supervisor; bring the form back to your adviser for final approval and signature. At that point the department will add you to the MB 492 class roll.
  • For academic credit for research experience on campus: Discuss the nature of the proposed research experience with your adviser. Get the form/explanatory handout from the microbiology office; fill out the form with the professor with whom you will be working; bring the form back to your adviser for final approval and signature. At that point the department will add you to the MB 493 class roll. For additional research opportunities, including ALS499 credit, contact the CALS Research Information site
