Congratulations Outstanding Alumni Award Recipients
- The Department of Microbiology is pleased to announce Dr. Carl E. Cerniglia as Outstanding Alumnus for 2009. Dr. Cerniglia received his Ph.D. (1976) in Microbiology from North Carolina State University following dissertation work in the laboratory of Jerome Perry, Professor Emeritus. Faculty Accomplishments
- Dr. Michael Flickinger has been elected to the 2009 class of Fellows of the American Chemical Society. The ACS Fellows Program was created by the Board of Directors in December 2008. Unlike ACS national awards, the distinguished honor of a Fellows designation will go to those who have distinguished themselves in multiple areas, including promoting the science, the profession, and service to the American Chemical Society. Dr. Flickinger and the other fellows elected to the inaugural class were honored at a special ceremony during the ACS National Meeting in Washington, D.C. in mid August.

Grants Awarded
- Drs. Eric Miller and Sue Carson (Biotechnology Program) received a 3-year grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to offer a new course, MB/BIT 210 Phage Hunters beginning in fall 2009 & MB/BIT 211 Phage Genomics beginning in spring 2010. Read more about it in the NCSU News Release.
- A $2 million grant, part of the federal stimulus package, comes
from NSF’s Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation program. The
funding is spread over four years, with the algae research scheduled for
completion in July 2013, and will draw on the expertise of an
interdisciplinary team of scientists from NC State. The research team
includes Dr. Bill Roberts, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering; Dr. JoAnn Burkholder, William Neal Reynolds Professor
of plant biology; Dr. Henry Lamb, professor of chemical and biomolecular
engineering; Dr. Heike Sederoff, assistant professor of plant biology;
Dr. Larry Stikeleather, professor of biological and agricultural
engineering; Dr. Amy Grunden, associate professor of microbiology; and
Dr. Wendy Boss, William Neal Reynolds Professor of plant biology. The
researchers will also be collaborating with NC State Ph.D. student Tim
Turner, and industry partners Diversified Energy Corp. and Innova Tech. Press Release

- Robert Davis completed the NCSU HR Academy, a certificate program that links participants to subject matter experts in 25 HR topics.
- Robert Davis has been elected to the Staff Senate for a second term.
- Robert Davis was presented with a University Diversity Award on April 15, 2009 at a reception to celebrate diversity at NC State.
