                      September 12, 2000

7:30-7:45pm:  Meeting started and refreshments were provided.

7:45-8pm:  Each officer introduced himself/herself.  Ben Coulter is our president,  Jennifer Zurney is our vice president and treasurer, Jonathan Cranford is our secretary, web page maintainer, and e-mail sender.  Katie Chandler and Paige Bennett are our CALS representatives.  Abria Vodenichar is our backup CALS representative.  Officers described the goals, functions, etc. of the Microbiology Club.  Each officer described his or her summer job or experience, and if applicable, how being in the Microbiology Club helped them get their summer job.

8-8:15pm:  Officers and club participants described what kind of speakers they would like to come and talk to the club.  Some topics are livestock microbiology, building an artificial retina, pharmaceutical microbiology, and maybe industrial microbiology.

8:15-8:23pm:  The officers announced that plans are being made to make the Microbiology Club a NCSU student chapter of the American Society of Microbiology (A.S.M.).  The officers and Dr. Luginbuhl (the faculty advisor) proceeded to describe what ASM is.

8:23-8:24pm:  Our CALS representative who went to the first meeting described what went on during the first CALS meeting.  She also described the Truman Scholarship to make people aware of its existence.

8:24-8:30pm:  Officers and club members talked about service projects the club must do.  Some ideas are to do some science demonstrations for an elementary school, do volunteer work for the Salvation Army by tutoring kids, and work for Hope for the Homeless by delivering supplies.  We will probably not work at the Food Bank this year.

8:30pm:  Dr. Luginbuhl announced she brought the club T-shirts and would be selling them right after the meeting.  The time and the guest speaker for the next meeting are to be announced in a future e-mail.

                      8:30pm approximately:  Meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on September 26, 2000

                      Prior to 7:30pm:

                      • We discussed issues.  Jennifer mentioned the club is thinking about attending the American Society of Microbiology (A.S.M.) meeting which will be May 20 to May 24 of 2001 in Orlando, Florida.
                      • The club is also considering volunteering for Stop the Hunger.  We would basically be putting letters in envelopes if we decide to volunteer for this organization.  We will probably end up volunteering for the Food Bank.  More information to follow.
7:30 pm:  Our speaker, Dr. John Mackenzie Jr., started his presentation entitled "Practical Digital Imaging Microscopy and Analysis".  He gave the club a tour of the facilities and the labs located in the basement of Gardner Hall.  Students were able to see the electron microscope, to see a sample under the electron microscope, to understand how it works, and were allowed to see various other procedures and equipment involved in digital imaging at N.C. State.

9:00 pm:  Tour ended and meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on October 10, 2000

                      • Our guest speaker was Scheherazade Pittman, who is a graduate student conducting research under Dr. Luginbuhl.  The research consists of characterizing fimbrial genes in B. avium.  This is a gram negative coccobacillus bacteria that causes turkeys and other birds to lose weight and to have their trachea collapse.
                      III. Advice about graduate school:
                      • Keep the line of communication open with your advisor and professors.
                      • Start planning while you are an undergraduate.
                      • Obtain lab experience.
                      8:30pm:  Meeting adjourned.

7:30pm:  Meeting started and refreshments served.

                      I.  Announcements:

                      • On Wednesday, November 8 and on Tuesday, November 14 club members are going to visit an elementary school class of third or fourth graders.  We are to be in the classroom at 2:30 pm, so we will have to leave earlier than this from campus.  We will probably be with the students until 3:30 pm, and then we will drive back to campus.  The topic of the visit is to emphasize and educate the students about the importance of washing your hands.  We may divide the class into two groups and have one group wash their hands, and the other group not wash their hands.  We will then proceed to swab each groups' hands and grow the result on a Petri Dish.  The amount of bacteria growing from the clean hands would then be compared to the amount of bacteria grown from dirty hands after an ample amount of time.
                      • If you are interested in attending this event please contact our president Ben Coulter.  Phone=233-3488  E-mail=blcoulte@unity.ncsu.edu.  Any suggestions for other activities we could plan to do with the students related to the importance of hand washing would be appreciated.  Furthermore, anybody who could provide carpool transportation from campus to the elementary school please contact Ben.  We would be glad to reimburse you for gas money if you decide to provide transportation.
                      II.  Speaker:

Dr. Gerald Elkan, who is a professor emeritus in the Microbiology Department here at N.C. State, was our speaker.  He gave a stimulating lecture accompanied by a slide show.  The main topic of his speech was nitrogen fixation by use of a symbiotic system of Azolla plants and Cyanobacteria mainly used to increase rice crop yields in the Philippines.

                      • Note:  Our speaker for the next meeting will be a person from the Bayer Corporation.
                      Approximately 8:30pm:  Meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on November 7, 2000

                      7:30pm:  Meeting began.

                      I.  Speaker:

                      • A woman from the Bayer Corporation spoke about the corporate world and how to succeed in business.  She focused on what employers are looking for in an employee.  She mentioned that a prospective employee should have experience, motivation, and should be willing to do jobs that are outside the norm to work their way up the company's ladder.
                      II. Information concerning next meeting:

                      • The next club meeting will be November 21 in Talley 3124.  For the next meeting, you need to bring a list of companies that you would like to hear speak next semester.  We need input early so that we can start scheduling speakers.  If you can not think of specific companies then you should indicate what area of Microbiology you would like to hear more about.  Furthermore, if you have any service project ideas, recommendations to make the club better, or any concerns the next meeting would be an excellent time to address these topics.
                      Approximately 8:30pm:  Meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on November 21, 2000

7:30pm: Meeting started, refreshments served.  Note that this is our last meeting for this semester.

7:30pm - 8:00pmDiscussion and brainstorm of possible speakers for next semester:

                            • Ben Coulter mentioned the possibility of having a speaker from the genetics lab at the FBI.  He also mentioned the possibility of having a speaker from the virology department at Glaxo Wellcome.
                            • Dr. Luginbuhl introduced the idea of allowing club members to attend speeches given by guest speakers at the Microbiology senior seminar classes next semester.  Another alternative could be that the same speaker that speaks to the senior seminar class could come to the Microbiology Club meetings.
                            • A member expressed some interest in having a speaker come to the club who is involved in the sales side of microbiology.  We will see if we can find such an individual.
8:00pm - 8:10pm:  Ben spoke about how well the trip to the elementary school went.  It went very well, and the club members that attended did an excellent job of teaching the students.  If enough interest is found, the club may join Scientists in the Classroom.  This would allow our club to be publicized more, which may allow us to take several trips to different schools.  Mr. Thomas Schneeweis (TJ) mentioned the idea of trying to get together groups of non club members majoring in microbiology to visit schools so we would have more man power.

Another important point that was brought up is that the national ASM meeting is coming up next year from May 20 to May 24 in Orlando Florida.  It would be possible for the club to plan a trip to this meeting, but we would have to plan some fundraisers to cover the monetary requirements of the trip.

8:10pm-8:30pm:  T.J. Schneeweis gave all that attended two information sheets concerning the Apex Bioscience business.  The company is located near RTP, and it is looking for students to work part time during the semester or full time during the Summer.  TJ hinted that this may be an up and coming company.  They are supposedly working on a drug that, if approved by FDA, could have some anticancer properties.  TJ volunteered to arrange a tour of this building, and he would provide transportation.  Contact him if you would be interested in attending a tour of this facility (phone=515-5344, e-mail= tj_schneeweis@unity.ncsu.edu or click here )

8:30pm - 8:50pm:  TJ mentioned the possibility of having another career awareness day for microbiology.  The department would like to have this event next semester, but they need input on when is the best day to have it (M,T,W,TH,F) and how it should be done.  It was suggested that the career awareness event be combined with a cookout over at the University Club to grab a bigger crowd than last year.  TJ also mentioned the possibility of inviting NCSU microbiology graduates to this event.  Note that the career awareness day is a great opportunity to network, for there are usually several important speakers from nice companies.

8:50pm - 9:00pm:  The logistics regarding next semester's meetings were discussed.  It was proposed that meetings be held on alternate days of the week for each week (Monday one week, Tuesday the next) so that more people could attend.  Dr. Luginbuhl introduced the Hewlett Initiative to the club.  This is a campus wide initiative to promote different ways of teaching in curricular departments on campus.  The microbiology department has joined this initiative, which means some of the courses will start to be reshaped so that there is more creative thinking, problem solving, case studies, and perhaps more writing.  Dr. Luginbuhl welcomed anybody who wanted to help "reshape" the curriculum.  Next semester she would like to have a small group of undergraduates that could meet with her and provide suggestions on how to reshape the curriculum to better educate all students.

                      9:00pm:  Meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on January 9, 2001

                      6:00pm:  Meeting began.

This meeting was pretty much just an organizational meeting and a preparation meeting for activities that are in the works for the Microbiology Club this semester.  Ben asked for any input about what kinds of speakers members would want to hear this semester.

                      • A point that was brought up again concerned the speaker from the SBI (State Bureau of Investigation) that will speak in Dr. Luginbuhl's senior seminar class.  His speech will be on January 30 and January 31 starting at 4:45pm in 3214 Gardner Hall.  Contact Dr. Luginbuhl  to learn more about this speech.
6:10pm:  T.J. Schneeweis delighted the club with more information about the Apex Bioscience field trip tour.  The tentative date for the tour is Monday, February 5, and we should be at Apex Bioscience by 8:00pm.  Transportation will be provided.  If you have never seen a industrial/pharmaceutical plant before this tour should be quite impressive.  They are currently developing a product that could have a major impact in the pharmaceutical world.  To learn more about Apex Bioscience visit  Apex Bioscience web page , and to learn more about the tour we will take come to the next Microbiology Club meeting.

If you want to attend the tour you should plan to attend the next Microbiology Club meeting on Monday Jan. 22 at 7:30pm in "The Microzone" on the fourth floor of Gardner Hall.  Do not plan  attend this tour if you are not absolutely sure you will be able to actually do it (i.e. please don't cancel on us at the last minute :)

6:40pm:  Our CALS representative informed us that she needed a planned budget for what the club will do this semester so that she can present it at her next meeting.  The club is planning to attend the national ASM meeting that starts on May  20 and goes to May 24 in Orlando Florida.  Some technicalities of this trip were discussed.  In light of last semester's success, the club will probably volunteer at more elementary schools as a Scientists in the Classroom project.  The club may also try to work with faculty members to develop a module package that can be transported from school to school.  If this package is developed it could possibly be used by other people to teach elementary school children about microbiology.  Another suggestion was to volunteer to tutor kids after school at Apex Middle School.

                      • Possible fundraisers are selling T-shirts, Dinamate Coupon books, and prepare letters for Stop the Hunger.
                      7:00pm:  Meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on January 22, 2001

7:30pm:  Meeting began.  Our CALS representative Katie Chandler made some announcements.  Club members are invited to work at a booth during Ag-awarness week on March 28.  The agriculture honor fraternity AZ (for men and women) was introduced to club members.

                      • Dr. Laster and a teacher from the middle school gave members more information about the microbiology learning module for Centennial Middle School that our club is invited to help prepare.  The students will be asked to get samples from their environment, perform dilutions, and grow these samples on plates.  The goal is to teach the students that microbes are everywhere and that microbes affect our lives.  Many members were interested in helping.
                      • The logistics part of this project == The teaching sessions start the week of Jan. 29 and will last for three weeks.  There will be two teaching sessions per week.  Members were invited to help prepare plates with our vice president Jennifer Zurney Tuesday, Jan. 23.  Another way for members to get involved in part of this project is to prepare some demonstrations for the middle school students and go over to the school and present them.  The time members need to go over to the school if they are interested in this part of the project is from 1 to 2:30pm.  Contact Dr. Scott Laster for further information if you would like to help these middle school students.
8:00pm:  Dr. Luginbuhl announced there would be a tour of the Biogen company--contact Dr. Gerry Luginbuhl for tour time.  T.J. gave members further information about the Apex Bioscience tour.  If you want to go on this tour and could not attend this club meeting and sign up on the sheet, you should contact TJ Schneeweis .

8:20pm:  Our president Ben Coulter notified members that he needed to prepare a budget to present to CALS, and he discussed with members the price of the ASM trip we are preparing to take May 20 -24 in Orlando, Florida. If members would like to go on this trip, they should sign up to be a member of ASM NOW so that their admission price will be cheaper.  See TJ Schneeweis for a pre addressed envelope and form to send off to become a member of ASM.  So that the club will be able to pay for some of the price of the trip, we will have to do some serious fund raising.  Possible options that were discussed were Micro Club T-shirt sells, selling Dinamates, having a car wash, and working at the ESA booths.  Times and days for these events will be announced later.

9:00pm:  One member announced that a professor is leaving--Dr. Parks.  The member called upon the power of the club to help get Dr. Parks a tribute plaque.

                      9:00pm:  Meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on February 5, 2001

The NC State Microbiology Club provided a field trip to Apex Bioscience on Monday, February 5.  The tour started at 8:00pm.  Apex Bioscience is located in the Research Triangle Park off of Highway 55.  The production manager, Cyrus Stacey, gave the club some background information about the purpose of Apex Bioscience, and information concerning the clinical trials of their product.  Their product is made from hemoglobin found in blood they obtain from the Red Cross.  They extract the hemoglobin to make pyridoxalated hemoglobin polyoxyethylene conjugate, or"PHP".  The product could be useful in a variety of medical cases where regulation of NO would be useful, such as a patient in shock.  He also provided the club with information about their specific plant site and how it operates.

He then split club members into smaller groups, and each group went with a different person who works at the plant.  We were given a generous tour of the entire plant, and were able to ask any questions we came up with.  Finally, Cyrus mentioned the possibility for student co-op positions.  Attending this tour showed students how a small production facility operates.  Furthermore, this tour presented an opportunity, if pursued, for the students to get involved in such an environment.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on February 19, 2001

7:30pm:  Meeting began.  Jim Merchant announced that students from the club would not be able to work at the ESA (Entertainment and Sports Arena) due to the fact that our club does not have an official statement confirming that we are a non-profit organization.  We are working on obtaining such a document so that we may be able to work there in the future.

                      • Our CALS representative informed us that Ag-awareness week starts March 26.  On March 27, groups will be putting up displays in the brickyard.  On March 28 and 29 these displays will be displayed to students passing by.  The club plans to make a display with some help from members who are in a biotechnology class.  We also hope to have T-shirts and some neat magnets to sell to people on these days.
Possible fundraisers suggested by Dr. Mike Hyman:
                      1. 1: Grow shiitake mushrooms
                      2. 2: Make refrigerator magnets: idiots' guide to food safety (quick reference guide)
8:00pm:  More information concerning the upcoming ASM trip:
                        • If you are a club member and would like to go, here is how you need to start preparing:
                          1. 1:  You need to sign up to be a student member of ASM as soon as possible.  You should see TJ Schneeweis or go to the  web page .
                          2. 2:  Start saving some money because the club will not be able to pay for the whole trip for you.  Expect to pay about $70 or $80 total.  We'll let you know more about pricing later.
The club plans to rent a van to drive down to Orlando Florida.  We plan to have about 6-10 people going on this trip.
                      8:30pm:  Meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on March 6, 2001

6:00pm:  Meeting initiated.  We discussed the club's involvement in Service Raleigh on April 7.  Members who participate will probably volunteer their work from about 8:00 or 9:00am until around 3:00pm.  Members who would like to participate should email Jonathan Cranford providing their name, phone number, and e-mail address.  I'm sure it'll be a beautiful day, and we'll have a blast!

We then moved on to talk about the ASM meeting. Members who would like to go should try to sign up before March 16 so that they can register for less money. You must register on your own, but the club will be able to pay for some of your expenses. The final deadline for registration is April 17, so make sure you do it by then!!! After students have registered themselves for the meeting, they should send Jonathan Cranford an email.

Dr. Luginbuhl mentioned that there would be a meeting for the North Carolina chapter of ASM soon.

Ben Coulter brought up the topics of club dues, and that we need to collect them for this semester.

Taste of State 2001 is Saturday, April 7 2001.

                      7:00pm:  Meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on March 19, 2001

7:30pm:  Meeting started.  We talked about working at the ESA for fundraising.  The ball is finally rolling on working at the ESA, but in reality it will be a project that won't happen until next semester.

We discussed the upcoming national and state ASM meeting activities.  See the minutes from the previous e-mail for some helpful information.  Concerning the national meeting, we will probably end up leaving May 19, and will stay until the 22.  We will probably use a big van for transportation.  All the members should have to pay for to go on the trip are the conference registration fee and maybe a few meals.  The club will try to pay for the rest.

Jen Sisko and Alan began a discussion about some type of athletic/field day/fundraiser for the club.  We discussed this in detail, with the idea of having
some sort of challenge between our department and another similar sized CALS department.  We would try to work with another club on planning this.  Issues of injury, liability, logistics, and fundraising on campus were introduced.  We decided different people would check with the intramural department, other clubs/academic departments, Agri-Life Council, Pullen Park, University Scholars Council, and other groups that do similar activities about these issues to help organize this neat event.

                      Refreshments were served.

                      8:30pm:  Meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on April 3, 2001

6pm:  Meeting began.  Refreshments were served.  Dr. Brown from the microbiology department gave a presentation concerning the R Nase P reaction.  Comparisons were made between archaeal and bacterial R Nase P.  Implications of the similarity between R Nase P in archaea and bacteria, and between R Nase P in archaea and eukaryotes were discussed.

6:49pm:  Ben notified the group that club elections will happen in two weeks at a special club meeting April 17 starting at 6pm in the Microzone.

                      • Service Raleigh was then discussed.  The club will be working with Trees Across Raleigh to plant trees in Roberts Park.  Jonathan Cranford was put in charge of the people in the club that will participate in Service Raleigh.  We all decided to meet in the brickyard at 9am for Service Raleigh.
                      • Katie Chandler announced that nominations for Ag-Life Council are coming up.  Anyone who is interested can try to get a position on the council, but they need to let Katie know if they are interested.  Furthermore, CALS wants everybody to vote in the CALS elections.
                      • Our ASM trip was discussed.  We have about six people going.  We decided to leave Raleigh on Saturday night or Sunday, and check out of the hotel on Tuesday.  In other words, we are not staying for the entire convention.  The club will probably use a university van to drive down there, and we will try to sell some T-shirts down there if permissible.
                      • Jen Sisko gave a speech about our plans to sponsor a field day in which faculty could compete against students in a game.  Our club could also compete against students in other clubs in some kind of sport.  The Botany Club and the Biochemistry Club are willing to help us get this event organized so that we may actually be able to do it next semester.
                      7:40pm:  Meeting adjourned.

Minutes from Microbiology Club Meeting on April 17, 2001

6pm:  Meeting initiated.  Ben Coulter made an announcement about the re-create State project.  Refer to their web site if you require more details.  Our CALS representative Katie Chandler announced the CALS Banquet on April 26.  She passed around a sheet for people who wanted to attend this event with her.

                      • Ben announced that CALS is looking for faculty sponsors
                      • Ben announced the we got our money from CALS for the ASM trip the club will take.
6:15pm:  Dr. Libby was our speaker for this meeting.  He talked to us about graduate school, and called to our attention the realities of graduate school.  He discussed his life with respect to how he has learned from his academic experiences.  He wanted us to understand what the life of an academic professor is like--the good and the bad.  He also discussed his research projects with us.

6:50-7:30pm:  Segun, who attended our last CALS meeting for us, discussed what happened in this meeting.  He announced that CALS is trying to set up programs that would allow students to get involved with local middle schools.  Given that the club has a history of participating in these types of activities, he suggested that the club should join the effort.

                      • We held elections to fill the officer positions for next year!!!
                        • New president = Jen Sisko
                        • New vice president = Jonathan Cranford
                        • New secretary = Jennifer Jackson

                        • New CALS representatives =
                          • 1) Segun Olusesi
                          • 2) Katie Chandler
                        • Jonathan Cranford will probably remain the e-mail composer and sender for the club.
                      7:30pm:  Meeting adjourned.
