greetings from the director

With the advent of the professional Master’s program in microbial biotechnology (MMB), my mission to align NC State University’s academic goals with the goals of corporations in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors became possible.

The MMB program integrates science and business education with industry training. It is the dynamic interface between industry professionals and the MMB program that creates the opportunity to respond to industry’s needs. Together with industry professionals, I am employing state-of-the-art real-life company projects and new educational methods with high demands on innovative thinking and adaptation skills.

It is a pleasure to experience the willingness and success of collaboration between the corporate world and NC State University as exemplified in the expanding MMB curriculum, and even more so to report stakeholders’ positive responses:

Students are excited about this new type of context-oriented and industry-relevant training. They value the large industry network and personal mentoring.

Graduates are in high demand in local companies in the surrounding Research Triangle Park.

Industry professionals are embracing the MMB degree and educational concept by providing a variety of resources including instruction, mentoring, internships and jobs.

University executives have fully integrated the MMB degree into the graduate program portfolio at NC State University and are planning additional degrees based on a similar concept.

I am greatly indebted to the many industry professionals, academics and students who contribute to the success of the MMB program.

Paul Hamilton, Ph.D
