Research Brief
Establishing multi-faceted interactions can help spur synergy and nurture many important aspects of human and academic qualities necessary for teamwork and entrepreneurship. It is timely to create this kind of environment at our universities. My goal is to establish a new genre of graduate-level education with immediate impact on our entire society including employers, graduates, universities and the general public. I work to initiate synergy between people of various backgrounds and fields. Specifically, I build educational alliances between academia and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. These new alliances are instrumental for the implementation of effective translational skills training. The Professional Science Master's (PSM) degree program in Microbial Biotechnology (MMB) provides the framework for this initiative. This two-year program provides students with multiple academic and professional competencies. I attempt to expose students to important aspects in the professional work environment and integrate both science and business learning. The students acquire a skill set catered to multiple industrial settings. Due to their integrated and work-related training, the graduates are capable of quickly adapting to new situations and providing important "out-of-the-box" contributions very early in their careers.
In addition to my work with the PSM/MMB program I am interested in the many capabilities of natural organisms and their production of a wide range of potential high value products. My research involves the discovery and utilization of new therapeutics for plant and human health from these resources. |
